MSP WELCOMES BOOST IN HOSPITAL CONSULTANTS

A funding boost from the Scottish Government will help improve patient care and treatment across Dumfries and Galloway says an MSP.

South of Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine was commenting following the announcement that the SNP Government will invest £3 million over the next three years to fund more than a dozen new consultant posts across the country.

Approximately 14 full time positions and 4 part-time jobs will be financed with the cash being provided.  Additionally, it has been proposed that health boards will administer extra funding to make those part time posts full time.

Ms McAlpine said:

“This major investment by the Scottish Government will see the creation of an extra consultant post in Dumfries and Galloway, which will make a real difference to patients and staff on the ground.

“It has been proven that patients receive better care when a consultant leads the service, and with an increasingly ageing population It is vital to ensure that our emergency services respond effectively and efficiently to the growing demand for unscheduled care.”

She added:

“However, we are only in the first phase of the investment programme.  In February, the Scottish Government pledged £50 million over the next three years to improve patient services nationally, and over the coming months, real change will be delivered as a result of this massive funding boost.”

Chief Executive of NHS Dumfries and Galloway Jeff Ace also praised the initiative.

Mr Ace said:

“This is a very helpful allocation.  We’re already starting to work up our winter plan for 2013/14 and will be able to factor in this increased resource where it’s most needed.”
