McAlpine Welcomes Mobile Coverage Checker

MSP Joan McAlpine has today welcomed the launch of a new mobile coverage checker, which provides a single-stop for consumers and businesses to discover the quality of their mobile coverage.

The checker, launched today by Ofcom, allows to zoom to a specific location or simply enter a place name or postcode, to receive data on coverage for each mobile network – down to 100 square meters. The map uses data provided by EE, O2, Three and Vodafone.

Commenting the SNP MSP said:

“I welcome this tool and encourage constituents to make use of it.

“I have no doubt that it will serve to highlight the dire coverage in much of Scotland, including Dumfriesshire.”

She added:

“Ofcom admit that poor mobile coverage “is a major issue in Scottish constituencies.”  But  Ofcom themselves could force the mobile operators to provide better coverage.

“Telecommunications companies can be told to increase coverage as part of their license agreement which is controlled by Ofcom. Telecommunications is a matter entirely reserved to Westminster to whom Ofcom is answerable.

“David Mundell MP has raised this issue in the press a number of times but really he should be raising it with his cabinet colleagues – the failure of mobile coverage in Dumfriesshire is entirely their responsibility.

“Hopefully if lots of us use this tool and feedback the woeful situation in Dumfriesshire the Westminster government will finally listen.”
