MSP Highlights Cash Back Funding Figures
Dumfries and Galloway has received almost £1.5 million of money seized from criminals thanks to the Scottish Government’s “Cash Back for Communities” scheme.
The region punches above its weight – with Dumfries and Galloway receiving more Cashback money than similar sized and larger local authority areas in the central belt.
Joan McAlpine, MSP for the south of Scotland said the figures showed that Dumfries and Galloway was a priority for the SNP Scottish government, which introduced the Cashback scheme to help give young people opportunities using the proceeds of crime.
She said;
“Dumfries and Galloway has received £1,401,950 since cash back was started by the first SNP government back in 2008. That’s twice what was given to Midlothian which got £537,429, and almost equal to the allocation to a big city like Aberdeen which got £1,500,788.
“Dumfries and Galloway has in particular benefitted from 3G pitches funded by cashback and has more of these than any other part of the country. This included a new state-of-the-art 3G pitch at Annan Athletic Football Club and Dumfries’s first 3G football and rugby pitch, at Dumfries high school. I hope this silences the doom-sayers who claim the region is over-looked. We are well above average – D & G is on the SNP ministers’ radar and I intend to keep it there.”
She added;
“Cashback has given chances to thousands of kids. It’s strange why no government before the SNP thought to do this with ill-gotten gains. Previously the money lay un-used. Congratulations are also due to the community organisations who successfully bid for the money. These bids require a lot of work and D&G’s success is well deserved.”
