McLeod welcomes launch of further Commonwealth Games fund

SNP MSP for the South of Scotland Dr Aileen McLeod today (Thursday) welcomed the launch of Celebrate, a new fund created by the four Scottish Lottery distributors, Big Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund and sportscotland to offer Lottery funding support to communities across Scotland as they celebrate and are inspired by the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Celebrate has a budget of £4 million and will make grants from £500 to £10,000 to communities across Scotland to come together to hold arts, heritage, sports and local community celebrations of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Celebrate will also support communities to celebrate the diversity of the Commonwealth and create a legacy of community and Commonwealth connections.

Dr McLeod has also tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament welcoming the announcement of the fund and is urging local organisations to consider what they could do to celebrate the 2014 games.

Dr McLeod commented:

“I warmly welcome this fund, which is intended to help spread celebration of the Commonwealth Games next year right across Scotland into every local community.

“I particularly hope that communities and organisations across Dumfries & Galloway will think about what they might like to do to celebrate the Commonwealth Games and our own links with the other countries of the Commonwealth.

“These could be arts, heritage or sporting events, as well as events which already take place but which next year choose to focus on the games. Given the strong community spirit that is evident across Dumfries & Galloway in the many community-run events which take place every year, I hope there will be a strong contingent of Dumfries & Galloway applications to this fund.

“People can find out more about the fund and how to apply by going to: www.celebrateit.org.uk.”
