South of Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine has welcomed figures showing that more affordable homes have become available in Dumfries and Galloway over the last three years through the National Housing Trust Initiative (NHT).
The Scottish Government, with support from the Scottish Futures Trust developed the original NHT model for councils and developers.
Under the original version of the model, developers and local authorities jointly fund the purchase of newly-built homes, which are then made available for rent at below market rates.
The money borrowed by councils to help fund the purchase of NHT homes in their areas is underwritten by the Scottish Government.
Recently published Scottish Government figures show that 54 new affordable homes have so far become available in Dumfries and Galloway through the scheme.
Ms McAlpine said:
“Despite Westminster’s cuts to our capital budget this SNP Government is doing everything possible to maximise investment in housing.
“It is my belief that everyone should live in a comfortable home which doesn’t cost the earth to keep.
“The National Housing Trust Initiative is playing an important role in giving people and families the opportunity to rent or buy a new home at affordable rates.”
