Attend the Community Shares Scotland Training Roadshow

Joan McAlpine is encouraging community groups in Dumfriesshire to find out more about community shares initiatives by attending a free roadshow taking place in Dumfries next week.

Community shares are a way of raising capital to start and grow a community project, such as a shop, community building, renewable energy initiatives or a local food scheme.  Community shares allow investment to come from the very community a project intends to benefit, meaning community shareholders can work together to provide services that meet local needs.

Joan McAlpine MSP said the community shares model had a proven track record of success, she commented:

“I was extremely impressed by the success of the community shares model in Portpatrick.  Earlier this month the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee I sit on took evidence from the Portpatrick Harbour Community Benefit Society who used community shares to purchase their harbour.  The group raised £100,000 in about three weeks with a large oversubscription and international interest.

“The same group are now embracing the Scottish Government’s Community Empowerment legislation and are looking to take over land behind the harbour that is currently owned by the local authority.”

The Community Shares Scotland Training Roadshow takes place on 3rd March in the Easterbrook Hall, Dumfries.  To book your place call 0131 220 3777 or register at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/community-share-scotland-dumfries-training-roadshow-tickets-20053052219
