SNP candidate for the Dumfries & Galloway Westminster constituency Richard Arkless today (Thursday) welcomed the findings of a Lord Ashcroft poll of voters in the D&G constituency showing the SNP narrowly ahead of the Tories and Labour, but said that the SNP takes nothing for granted and would redouble its efforts in the run-up to the May election.
Mr Arkless commented:
“This is a very encouraging poll for the SNP, but I’m taking absolutely nothing for granted. If anything we will redouble our efforts to demonstrate to the people of Dumfries & Galloway how voting SNP in May will give this region, and Scotland, real clout at Westminster.
“SNP MPs stand up for Scotland, so we’ll make sure those things that most matter to the people of Dumfries & Galloway – jobs, the NHS, education and pensions – are not forgotten in Westminster.
“Only the SNP can make the Westminster parties think again about their Austerity agenda, which they have all signed up to. Austerity was not designed for the economy in Dumfries & Galloway and punishes us much more than most. D&G did not create the UK’s economic problems and I am determined we should not be paying for it.
“People want to empower Scotland, and they want to vote positively for a party 100 per cent focused on Scottish interests – the SNP is the only party in this election which stands for that. A vote for the SNP in May is a vote for a strong voice for this region at Westminster, and for someone who will always put this region’s interests first.
