Action plan to support Scottish dairy sector

SNP MSP Aileen McLeod has welcomed news the publication of a 25 point plan to help support the Scottish dairy sector.
The Scottish Dairy Plan takes into account the recommendations made by the Scottish Parliament’s Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee following its own enquiry into the Scottish dairy industry.
There are five main themes set out in the Plan:
Market development
Promoting best practice in dairy farming
Promoting a transparent and efficient supply chain
Supporting First Milk in transforming its operation in Scotland
Ensuring international rules are correct
Commenting, Aileen said:
“The dairy sector is not only vital to our local economy here in Dumfries & Galloway, but also to Scotland as a whole. More than 900 dairy farms across Scotland account for over £400 million of output, which shows how valuable and important the dairy sector is both to the farming industry and to the wider economy.
“Dumfries & Galloway is building a reputation for high quality food and drink. The dairy sector is central to this, with a wide array of prize-winning cheeses and other dairy products commonplace in our region.
“It will be crucial for Dumfries & Galloway to grasp the lucrative opportunities available through the domestic and international markets to ensure that our dairy farms go from strength to strength. I look forward to working with local stakeholders to ensure the Scottish Dairy Plan brings in the best possible result for our famers and our region.”
