Mull buyout bid approved on day of Parliamentary debate

“Fantastic News for the Mull of Galloway” – says McLeod

SNP MSP for the South of Scotland Dr Aileen McLeod today (Wednesday) warmly welcomed news that the Mull of Galloway Truest will receive £388,500 to purchase the Mull of Galloway site. The award is 95% of the value of the land and leaves the Trust with £4,000 more to find.

The news comes on the same day as Dr McLeod will lead a Member’s Business debate at Holyrood in support of the buyout.

Commenting ahead of the debate, Dr McLeod said:

“I am absolutely delighted with this excellent news, which takes the Trust so much nearer to their goal of buying the Mull of Galloway for the community.

“Given the enviable track record of the South Rhins Community Development Trust in developing and running the Mull of Galloway as a visitor attraction, I was never in any doubt that they had a strong case and the overwhelming support of the community but I am incredibly pleased and relived that the bid has been successful.

“This evening’s debate was to be about support for the bid. Now it will be a celebration and also an opportunity to highlight the Trust’s plans for the future.

Steve Hardy, Vice Chair of the South Rhins Community Development Trust and the current company secretary of the Mull of Galloway Trust said:

“This is fantastic news for the Mull of Galloway, the community and everyone who has worked so hard to get to this point.”

“The Mull of Galloway Trust are delighted that all the hard work that has been put into the application for this funding has resulted in our now being able to purchase the 30 acres of land at the tip of the Mull of Galloway. This is a community project, to be run by the Community on behalf of  the Community.

“The hard work starts now, as we as a Trust realise the enormous responsibility we now have to make sure this iconic structure remains in as pristine condition as possible  for years to come is ours. All we need now are the visitors!”

Ends.
