MCALPINE WELCOMES 44% DROP IN CRIME RATE

SNP MSP for the South of Scotland Joan McAlpine has welcomed figures released by the Scottish Government which show that crime in Dumfries & Galloway has fallen by 44% since 2007 and 11% in the last year alone. 

Non-sexual crimes of violence have reduced by 14% on last year and 32% since 2006/07, a reduction from 160 to 109. Crimes of dishonesty are down by 7% on last year and have fallen by 42% since 2006-07, from 3,649 to 2,124. The crime of handling offensive weapons is down 30% on last year and 61% since 2006/07 – with a fall from 159 to 62.

Commenting, the SNP MSP said:

“It’s great to see that the level of crime across the region is continuing to fall significantly.  An overall decrease in recorded crime of 44% since 2007 is a tremendous achievement.

“These figures show that the Scottish Government’s approach to policing in Scotland has been a success.  By focussing on frontline services, such as investing in 1,000 extra officers, as well as making savings by creating a single police force rather than they have avoided redundancies and attacks to officers’ contracts, unlike what is happening in England and Wales.

“But most of all, these figures are testament to the hard work and commitment of our police officers. It is their efforts, supported by the Scottish Government, which have made the real difference across Dumfries & Galloway, and Scotland as a whole.”
